New York mayor signed new legislation Tuesday banning guns in Times Square. Recent court ruling declared such prohibition to the unconstitutional. Mayor said gun violence is a national nightmare not a local nightmare.
In decision issued in last week federal judge blocked the state law that prohibits guns in wide range of spaces including Time Square. The ruling permitted prohibition of firearms in government buildings, schools, polling places and courthouses. Religious centers can also choose to outlaw firearm.
The judge however stopped his order from being implemented until an appeals court could weigh in. Despite the legal limbo Adams went ahead with announcement anyway.
We are not going to live in fear and going to make sure those who visit this city won’t be paralyzed with the fear of knowing someone is carrying guns. Mayor also signed a second bill on Tuesday aimed at preventing the flow of illegal firearms. They also collecting data on dealers that sell firearms for crimes. Also identifying ways where New York work with states to prevent interstate trafficking of firearms.
