Brahmastra is planned as trilogy with the first installment laying all the ground work for what’s to come. As well as introducing us to our main protagonist shiva.
The genre of the movie fits in a superhero action romantic musical fantasy. Each of the facets in this get moments to shine. They all connected and feel natural in the execution. There are several song and dance numbers which are mainly towards the beginning of the first half. But the songs are incredibly catchy and make us to listen over again and again.
The dance numbers is massive in scale and it has so many singers and dancers taking part in it. The choreography is great to watch and the scene fits extremely well. The movie starts with awesome animation to introduce us to the lore.
Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Butt play role of Shiva and Isha respectively. Isha is love interest of Shiva and they have wonderful chemistry together. Mouni Roy is the main antagonist within the story. She got great look that makes her menacing and powerful. She’s got throat tattoos and the special effect are used to light them up at key moments to really intensify the power and rage.
Finally the last main character we have is guru played by Amitabh Bachchan. The wisdom and fierceness that his character has is love to see.
Large portion of the movie that rely heavily on CGI and other special effects. So that means overall feel of this rests on whether or not those graphics are passable. We meet different characters with abilities and each of these abilities is represented with different colors. This makes it wonderful to watch as a large battle happens. Because these are colors just exploding all over the screen.
When it comes to the action sequences there is very minimal amount of slomo that’s utilized. It used effectively to really enhance a motion or a fight movement instead of relying on that throughout every sequence. There are lot of quick cuts when fights break out especially in the first half of the movie. But they seen to lessen in favor of wider shots that showcase the fight choreography in the later half of the film.
Speaking to the length this movie is a long one at 2 hours and 43 minutes but it didn’t feel long. Overall story arc it has predictable moments and direction. There are some story reveals that felt like they were meant to be a surprise. But had already guessed it way before the story told. It’s not a huge negative to the narrative because the reveal just isn’t meant to be so mysterious and shocking.
Overall Brahmastra part 1 Shiva is an exciting entry into the cinematic universe. The actors are charismatic and easy to root for with a story arc that is engaging. We give 4 out of 5 star for the movie.
