Chemical that causes cancer; Unilever recalls 5 popular brands

Unilever has recalled shampoo products of major brands including Dove due to the presence of chemical that causes cancer. The action follows suspicions of benzene, a chemical known to cause cancer. Unilever has recalled products manufactured before October 2021.

According to a notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s website, some popular brands of aerosol dry shampoos such as Nexxus, Tresemme and Tigi have been recalled. The company has not disclosed the amount of benzene found in the products. Although the company is handling the matter with extreme caution.

Using products containing benzene may cause leukemia. With this, the safety of personal care products is becoming a question mark. In the last year and a half, many products have been found to contain the cancer-causing chemical benzene.

Several aerosol sunscreens have been withdrawn from the market. Including Johnson & Johnson, Neutrogena, Edgewell Personal Care Company’s Banana Boat, and Beiersdorf AG’s Coppertone. This is not the first time benzene has been found in aerosol dry shampoos. In December, the company recalled dry shampoos like Pantene and Herbal Essences due to the presence of benzene.

Although there is no benzene limit for cosmetics such as dry shampoo. The Food and Drug Administration specifies that products should not contain substances that are toxic or harmful to the human body.
