On Thursday, the women’s Group E match between Germany and Costa Rica will be overseen by Stephanie Frappart, Neuza Back and Karen Diaz. As a result, FIFA declared that they would be the first female refereeing squad for the World Cup for men.
As the first female referee of a men’s World Cup qualifier in March and a 2020 Champions League game, Frapart served as the fourth official for last week’s Group C match between Poland and Mexico. Nueza, a Brazilian, and Diaz, a Mexican, both age 38, will work as the Frenchwoman’s helpers.
Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda and Yamashita Yoshimi of Japan will also serve as referees for the upcoming competition in Qatar.
