First aid should be administered based on the type of burn that has occurred. Burns are mainly of three categories -First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree.

A first degree burn is characterized by redness and swelling at the burn site. You will also see a slight discoloration of the skin. A second degree burn is a burn that penetrates about half the depth of the skin. This kind of burn causes blisters to form on the skin. A third degree burn is a condition where the skin is burnt. Due to this, the nerves and muscles of the skin can be injured. In case of first degree burn, it is not necessary to see a doctor. On the contrary, it is better to seek medical help in case of second and third degree burns.

The first thing to do after a burn is to wash the burned area. Place the burnt area under the pipe without rubbing with your hands. Wash with clean water only and it can be placed under the pipe for 20 minutes. Don’t spend too much time on it and be careful not to pop the blisters if they form.

Do not put paste, honey, ice or butter on the burn under any circumstances. Doing so can sometimes lead to infection. Moreover, if paste-like materials are applied, it will be difficult to reach the hospital and provide treatment.

Try to cover the burn area with a clean polythene cover when preparing to go to the hospital. Be careful not to reheat the burned area. Sun exposure should also be avoided.

Apply only the ointment and antibiotic cream prescribed by the doctor. Do not bring other objects close to the burned area under any circumstances. Applying ice to a burn can provide temporary relief, but don’t do it. Cells in the burn area are likely to be destroyed thereby.
