At the age of 95, the former pope Benedict XVI passed away at his home in the Vatican. Up until 2013, he presided over the Catholic Church for almost eight years. Since Pope Gregory XII left office in 1415, Pope Benedict XVI was the first to step down.
Benedict, who was born Joseph Ratzinger in Germany, was elected Pope in 2005 at the age of 78. He was one of the most senior popes ever chosen.
Pope Francis, who succeeded him, paid him numerous visits and urged followers to pray for his wellbeing.
