Airtel and Jio have started rolling out the net generation mobile technology in select cities. People are figuring out how they can upgrade to this faster 5G network. Scammers are using this opportunity to dupe people.
Cyber criminals are sending links to people on WhatsApp asking them to click on that given link to update their phone from 4G to 5G. If you click such links your phone could be hacked in fact these links could be malware they could steal your data including your bank details.
So be alert imposters have another way to trick people. Fraudsters may even call you and pretend to be from telecom company. If you get such calls with a promise of 5G network on your phone ignore it. If they ask of an OTP or any other confidential information do not share that.
Scammers are even demanding money along with other sensitive information to help you get new 5G sim. Most companies upgrade your existing sim to 5G you do not need to buy new sim to get 5G connectivity.
Police departments in multiple Indian cities have warned people against such scams. No one can remotely enable 5G network on your phone and also do not download any app that promise 5G.
